Checking Your Sound

Have you been to an event and the sound was either too loud, or too soft, or distorted, or inconsistent, or the microphone kept on screeching – you know those scenarios where the performing artist keeps on looking at the sound guy with questioning eyes? And you also keep looking at the same artist with your own questions. Well these scenarios and more usually follow when event organisers fail to take care of one simple thing: sound check.
Good event sound quality does not happen by chance; it is a systematic process that involves many cables and mic test, one two, one two.

Sound checking is a crucial pre-event process where an experienced sound engineer tests all the equipment which relate to the sound of an event and then makes sure that the sound levels are balanced and clearly audible to the event attendants; some people take this for granted at their own risk.

A friend of mine once told me about a time she went to an event. When she got there with three of her friends, she says that she could not hear the artist’s lyrics, and for her lyrics are important, and just for that dissatisfaction, she got up and left the event within 15 minutes. The moment people’s expectations are not met, they go online and search for the next vibe.

An article on GES (https://insights.ges.com/events/importance-of-sound-and-how-it-can-transform-an-event- ) says, “inappropriate sound can literally drive your attendees away. Appropriate sound or music choice can add to the experience, enhance the engagement, and keep your attendee’s attention dramatically longer. What behaviour do you want from your attendees?” My friend, unfortunately, was that attendee who was driven away by inappropriate sound.
