Checking Your Sound

Image
By L.DISANE Image: Google Archives   Have you been to an event and the sound was either too loud, or too soft, or distorted, or inconsistent, or the microphone kept on screeching – you know those scenarios where the performing artist keeps on looking at the sound guy with questioning eyes? And you also keep looking at the same artist with your own questions. Well these scenarios and more usually follow when event organisers fail to take care of one simple thing: sound check. Good event sound quality does not happen by chance; it is a systematic process that involves many cables and mic test, one two, one two.  Sound checking is a crucial pre-event process where an experienced sound engineer tests all the equipment which relate to the sound of an event and then makes sure that the sound levels are balanced and clearly audible to the event attendants; some people take this for granted at their own risk. A friend of mine once told me about a time she went to an event....

Half Rooms in Sunnyside

By L.DISANE When we play music, Our volumes have to be uncomfortably low. We are yet to afford spaces, Where walls are room dividers.   In the half rooms we occupy, My neighbour’s conversation Is also my conversation. Sometimes it is even louder than my music.   I just thank God that I do not understand their language And I thank God that they do not understand my language At least in that way, It is still private.   Private enough for each of us to gossip and enjoy ourselves.   But in life there are other sounds which aren’t language specific Like a woman moaning during sex I never know what to do with my ears at this point. I’m just grateful that my neighbour is not a stallion that goes on forever Five minutes, and my awkwardness is ejaculated. I do, however, feel pity for his lady companion, She might never reach an orgasm in this relationship It seems that when he is done, she must also be done. Or maybe the...

Rise Khosi Rise... but how?

Image
By L.DISANE Unfortunately management at Naturena were sold an idea which moved the club away from arguably its core contributor to success as a football organisation; and if Kaizer Chiefs F.C. want to reclaim their glory days, then they have to re-implement only one element in their style of playing football: Kasi Flavour. Image: Internet Archives Kaizer Chiefs is a club born from the flair found in the football streets of Johannesburg “locations,” or as it is known in the streets of Johannesburg: “elokshini”. If you fast forward to the Kaizer Chiefs of today, this very same flair is no longer visible, yet if you watch their heyday games, it contributed greatly to their initial success as a football club. This simply means that Kasi Flavour is no longer trained or motivated in the training guidelines of this club. But why not train Kasi Flavour when it makes fans scream out in joy and fill up stadiums? Think of Emmanuel ‘Scara’ Ngobese, think of Jabu Mahlangu, formerly know...

ArtifiedBeing Solo Exhibition Review

Image
By L.DISANE   uMbusi, also known as ArtifiedBeing, recently concluded his first ever solo art exhibition at Botaki Ba Afrika in Hatfield, Pretoria. The exhibition was titled ArtifiedBeing, a name the artist gave himself when he knew that he was a messenger to the arts. The theme of the exhibition was: the beginning of an infinite journey. Image: Artist Archives BACKGROUND uMbusi realised that he was ArtifiedBeing when he was able to create art using various artistic genres. He searched for the meaning of the word on Google but found nothing; and since the word was non-existing, he decided to be the first one to use it. He believes it is a beautiful and true way to describe himself as a messenger of the arts. uMbusi is an abstract creative and likes to use the term uMdali more than artist to describe himself, “I give the non-existing breath to this world, it makes me godly in a way.” He leaned more to the abstract world because of the way it allowed him to engag...

Spiritual Explorations with Tcha

Image
By L.DISANE Image: Artist Archives   Tcha is a contemporary artist based in Pretoria. He has been drawing since he was young, and he regards this skill as a way of conceptualising his ideas. In primary school, he remembers how he would draw his own anatomy diagrams while everyone else would get print outs from the teacher to stick on to their books using Pritt; this is something he is still proud of to this day. His earliest days in art were filled with travels to museums, craftsmen, churches, caves, etc., and it was through these visits that he was blessed with the experience of seeing and engaging with a variety of artworks. These visits grew his interest in the creative process. He regards art as an answer to his calling. “It has helped me decipher certain concepts that I couldn’t have without the avenues art provided and provides. I become so engaged in what I am creating that I pretty much mirror whatever I am doing and thus understand it from a inner individua...

What Is Black Labone?

Image
By Aysha Amogelang Ramatena Home for creatives? It may not be a home in the traditional sense i.e., having a house with rooms, but is a haven for all kinds of artists. Apart from the audience, Black Labone houses visual artists, painters, sketch artists, tattoo artists, poets, and musicians. The art hub is situated in the centre of the capital city, at The African Beer Emporium, just behind the infamous Wing Republic. Image: Black Labone Facebook Page Black Labone was established in 2017 by a group of individuals who saw it fit to create a safe space for artists in Pretoria and the country. It serves as a personal experience for all kinds of individuals, even the ones who do not consider themselves as artists. Whether or not a person is an artist, they find the experience to be quite interesting. People come from as far as KwaZulu Natal for this unique experience. ‘Labone’ in Setswana means ‘Thursday,’ hence the event is weekly and is held on that specific day. Some may con...
